USB Type A and USB Type C

What is USB-C? | Read all about it here!

Here at BPF, we appreciate how difficult it is keeping up with the latest technological changes. Even something as simple as a USB is getting upgraded, so it’s no surprise we often get asked about them; from what type they are and what they can do, to whether they can accommodate for your devices. Understanding the differences between USB-A and USB-C can be very useful!

As such, to save you from trawling through pages and pages of technical lingo, we’ve put together a short article on USB-A and USB-C to keep you up to date.

What does USB-A and USB-C look like?

USB Type A: The majority of current and older devices have USB-A type ports. These are the common, rectangular USB plug (and socket) connection that we are used to seeing.

USB Type C: This is the new and emerging standard USB type for new devices and is expected to replace all USB connectors eventually; with most new laptops already only using USB Type C.

USB Type C features a smaller, reversible connector socket (unlike USB Type A) and the cables have the same connector on both ends

Where will you find Type-C Charging?

C-Type charging is quickly becoming the new industry-standard connector for transmitting both power and data (on a single cable). As a result, you’ll find USB-C ports on most lightweight laptops and newer devices; which use them in place of a traditional barrel-style connector for attaching an AC adapter (for charging or powering battery operated devices).

How much faster is USB-C?

Power Delivery (PD) is a specification for handling higher power and allows for a range of devices to charge quickly over a USB connection. Consequently, USB-C PD can charge your device up to 70% faster than standard 5W charging!
